TIL there are "bluetooth" balls which make sounds when caught or dropped (based on strength of impact possibly)
A bloke at work got some for thingmas, he said he has made the catch sound the sounds of a shotgun cocking and the drop sound a shotgun going off
Modern wonders eh ?
What sound(s) would you pick ?
I think I'd go with maybe catch = tick and drop = bomb exploding, so tick tick tick tick ... boom !
or maybe something more peaceful like catch = drip, drop = splash, so drip drip drip drip ... splash
Catch sound: a single clap - get a round of applause for as long as you juggle. And therefore drop sound: "Boo!"
Definitely wouldn't get really annoying really quickly, I'm sure.
I'd go with a duck's quack for a catch & the sad trombone for a drop.
Little Paul - - Parent #
I’m feeling all nostalgic for annoyingly noisy props of the past… so load them up with samples of chatter-rings, shaker cups and “audiballs”
hmmm howabout a mix of Void's and Orinoco's ideas, claps for catches, and wah wah sad trombone for drops
LP, no bleeps and bloops from your telephone exchange ?
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
I'd be tempted by "Sack the juggler!" for the drop.

Seeing as Jays pontificating about online communities has resurfaced 3 years later, I may as well ask something that has wandered across my feeble brain a few times recently…
Does anyone know of any juggling themed mastodon instances?
Giocoleria da diporto - - Parent #
Unless some server of that distributed social network has set the character limit beyond 500, I see no reason to create a space dedicated to juggling on Mastodon, since it would have no particular merits compared to Twitter.
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
It would have one major merit, in that it wouldn't be on Twitter!
I've given up on Twitter since Musk decided to disable the 3rd party API. As far as I'm concerned, having to use either a browser or the official Twitter app means that the value I would get from Twitter doesn't merit the effort involved in trying to see what *I* want to see, rather than what Twitter wants me to see. So I don't bother, and I'm certainly not alone in that.
Mastodon, however, works.
Giocoleria da diporto - - Parent #
But it is impossible to use Mastodon, as well as twitter, to make the slightest technical discourse.
I mean: in 2023 having to write a text of ten lines with continuous 1/10, 2/10, etc... is worse than having to use [1], [2] on a newsgroup due to lack of text formatting...
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
Ah, I see your point, and you're right, but I think you may have missed the point of the original question.
Not all juggling discourse has to be technical. Indeed, in the 30 years that I've been using online jugging forums, I'd say that the majority of discourse (at least the discourse that I've bothered to read) has probably been non-technical.
Microblogging sites serve a different purpose, which might not be of interest to you, but is of interest to others. That being the case, it's fair to discuss the relative merits of different sites for that purpose.
Giocoleria da diporto - - Parent #
For information on festivals or conventions or to advertise your videos, which are the two most common types of communication between us jugglers, the already used social networks seem sufficient to me.
Introducing new ones only further disperses the information, already too scattered around (every time I have to remember where I saw a video from a few months ago I go crazy!).
What advantages do you see in introducing microblogging as well?
Little Paul - - Parent #
Ok, so you don’t like mastodon. thats fine, not every technology has to be liked by everyone, and not everyone has to like every technology!
My question still stands though, are there any juggling mastodon instances out there?
Giocoleria da diporto - - Parent #
Burrage is quite active on Mastodon as well, if he comes by here again he might be of some help to you.
https://mastodon.social/@lukeburrage@masto.nu
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
Personally, none :-D
As far as juggling is concerned, I can't see that it's something I'd use, but for anyone whose preferred social medium is Mastodon it makes perfect sense that they would like an easy way to find juggling discussion on that medium.
I've certainly benefitted from information that I've found through Mastodon groups that is doubtless available elsewhere, but not anywhere that was as convenient for me to find it.
Relax your FOMO! You don't need to be able to access every public jugging discussion that's online!
Giocoleria da diporto - - Parent #
The dispersion of information is not my problem, if anything it is for an aspiring professional who wants to expand his network of contacts.
Ta daa!
https://jugglers.network/
However, it will be closing down at the end of the month :(
The fact that you were unable to find this might explain the problem with Mastodon!
I played with Mastodon for a while when it first came out, I found it much more pleasant than Twitter. I don't think being on a specific instance is all that important, following & using the relevant hashtags is the key. Myrdin has the right idea:
https://jugglers.network/@myrdin/109439146116788809
Just out of idle curiosity I just took a look at post lengths on the Edge. The average length of messages posted to the Edge is 410 characters. My personal average is 537 which ranks 195th in the leaderboard of wordiest posters.
Longest message so far is 53192 characters (yes it was by me, so were 8 of the top 10), shortest is 1 character.
EJC 2023 is on Mastodon jugglers network, but all the other public posts seem to be about French politics.
https://jugglers.network/public/local
I cannot recommend it as all my attempts to join have failed.
Giocoleria da diporto - - Parent #
Ta daa!
Isn't it forbidden by the regulation to recycle the animation of an n-ball siteswap similar to 774 (if I have seen correctly) on a second thread?
Or even transcribe the sounds of old versions of Windows? 🥸
How did you find it? Following the traces left by thematic hashtags?
In any case, I wasn't the only one who found it unattractive, if who created this «instance» (do they really call them that in those parts? To an Italian it sounds like a very bureaucratic or IT term, so I suppose it is extremely geeky even for an English-speaking) writes:jugglers.network will close on June 24.
The instance opened in November 2022 and only a few jugglers have joined.
I spend my days on the computer and would like to devote my free time to nature walks and seeing the people I love rather than more and more screen time. So I decided to close the instance and leave mastodon (at least for a while).
The toots have been few on the local timeline but always interesting, thanks to all who participated.
🤹 Happy juggling.
What character limit did it have? Because if there are already few and you have to sacrifice some for hashtags hoping to be read, the situation is heavier than Twitter, which however is now taking the opposite direction, opening up to long-winded speeches as long as you pay for a subscription...
Little Paul - - Parent #
I’ll be honest, I didn’t actually look.
I’m quite settled on mstdn.social and not looking for a move, I was just curious if there was an instance with any momentum amongst jugglers.
I offer no judgement about whether there should or shouldn’t be one, I was just curious if there was one!
Richard Loxley - - Parent #
When I joined Mastodon last year, I thought for a while about adding a Mastodon server to https://juggling.family/
In the end I decided against it, when I looked into the implications of moderation and having procedures in place to respond to legal take-down requests for international jurisdictions.
I have however just set up my own personal Mastodon server. It's doable, but not trivial. I still don't think I'm up for the moderation issues. (I set up my own host because the host I was on is closing down due to the moderation workload.)

Did you have a cold when you posted that?
Well Hedo there!:) my name is Amanda and I’m a baby juggler. I really want to meet others in the city that wanna
practice and play as much as I do and a safe place to become the
artist I wAnna grow into.
I’m currently practicing juggling (the basics of it) but I’m also looking into magic (I mostly starting to look into magic with top hats) I’m also looking into the unknown like Acrobatics, cloud swinging. I’m also new to the city so I’m not sure whaT festivals to check out and get involved in.
Hedo to you too. You don't say which city or country you're in, so check out the Clubs section to see if there's a juggling club near you. (And of course, if they're meeting again, since the apocalypse, etc.)
Welcome to the site, and good luck with your juggling journey.
Hi there, °wow°, how. en. ter. pri. sing. a. spirit! :-) good luck w\ every single and the whole of all your ideas!
Well, that's certainly a niche. I've seen photos of puppy juggling, and I've been practicing kitten kickups for a while myself, but I've never seen baby juggling done on stage.
Seriously, though, welcome, and do follow the advice to find a local club. If you're in a city, that shouldn't be too hard to do, and juggling "in company" is loads more fun than by yourself.
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
Here you go Tufty (not quite juggling, but anyway):
ISTR there was a web resource created somewhere a few years ago for sharing helpful information about organising conventions.
If I'm right, can anyone point me to it? Specifically, if there's an index of recommended caterers for UK convention organisers, I recently discovered a Bristol-based caterer that I'd like to add to that list.
It may have been part of the http://thebritishjugglingconvention.co.uk/ wiki. Which is currently broken, unfortunately. (Somebody poke somebody relevant, please.)
Or there was a UK Juggling Convention organisers group, but I can"t remember where. Maybe it was a Yahoo group, in which case that may have died recently too, unless it moved elsewhere?
More helpful answers are welcome... :-)
The wiki has been broken for a few months, poking attempts have been made by myself and others without success so far.
The yahoo group like many other yahoo groups has gone, I think Richard posted asking if anyone wanted anything saving.
There is a BJC: Behind The Scenes facebook group.
oh, there is also a Convention Organisers Skillshare Group on facebook
I believe Richard had an "organising a one day juggling convention" website but I can't find it now, I guess it might be a bit dated.
If you are just interested in the old content of the wiki, have a look at the archived version:
https://web.archive.org/web/20210227102107/http://thebritishjugglingconvention.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=British_Juggling_Convention_Wiki
http://thebritishjugglingconvention.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=British_Juggling_Convention_Wiki is back up, hooray.
Ah. Well, the front page of it is, anyway. Hopefully the rest will get fixed soon.... :-/
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
Thanks for the replies.
I'll take a look at the FB groups. ISTR the wiki was something to do with Mini, who I haven't heard anything of for a loooong time.
Richard Loxley - - Parent #
I believe there were two rival wikis, one dropped off the internet years ago, the other I think is currently broken.
Archives here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20210227102107/http://thebritishjugglingconvention.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=British_Juggling_Convention_Wiki
https://web.archive.org/web/20100629042541/http://www.thebjc.org/onedayers/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
I wrote content for the latter, and retrieved it to republish here:
https://www.bristolcircus.co.uk/howtorunaconvention/
Hmmm... it's almost like there should be a 'thing'.
There are at least 3 different FB groups regarding organising BJCs/other conventions. But none of them are anywhere near as useful as the wiki was (I though it was back but it turns out I've just got most of it cached on my pc already...)

But without a central something, word of mouth is going to be the most reliable way of informing future BJC orgs about possible caterers.
Bungay Balls Up is happening in virtual form this May, on our originally scheduled dates.
Our virtual video chatroom/meetup/hangout will go live on Friday 15th May from ~18:00 BST.
If you're a Bungay regular, or if you've just always wanted to come along, then pop in at some point. There's already a virtual poker tournament scheduled for May 22nd, and other events may well pop up as we go along.
Thanks to Richard for sorting out all the relevant coding.
We'll post the URL on Friday!
Hurray!
For UK readers, St Peter’s Brewery, about two miles from the Bungay buttercup field, delivers nationwide. I recommend them if you drink alcohol and like beer.
(On the other hand this brewery links to the late lamented ijdb, which is intriguing: http://www.banksandtaylor.com/link.html )
Okay Bungayphiles, the site is more or less set up, so if you want to pop in a bit early, head along to...
https://virtual.bungayballsup.com/
...and input the password that you should be able to figure out. If you can't figure it out, please ask @BungayBallsUp on Twitter for help.
It's Bungay Time!
Richard Loxley - - Parent #
The virtual convention is doing really well. So far about 188 "attendees" over the first 6 days. Still very busy even on the weekdays, and we'll probably get more people again at the weekend.
If you haven't popped in yet, please do. It really does feel like a "proper" convention, with the number of people, and the social interaction and workshops.
See you at https://virtual.bungayballsup.com/
:-)
I had a great time at this year's Bungay. Had a real BBU feel to it. Great to see so many familiar faces.
Online games accompanied with a video chat room were a great innovation. Congrats to Void for becoming backgammon champion 2020.
Plenty of great poker with all the banter of face to face sessions. Congratulations to Hairy for winning this year's tournament. In fact the poker worked so well we are planning a monthly game using the virtual BBU site which is remaining open.
Mixed reviews of the food. Some people commented that it was no better than they could have made themselves while others liked the homemade feel of the menu. Toilet and shower facilities were an improvement over usual although the view from the composting toilets was missed by many.
A lot more workshops than usual including creative writing, baking, crafts and crossword solving.
A few regular faces missed it this year but most of the usual Bungay faces were here. It was the best ever attended BBU with over 200 coming from as far away as Miami.
Still hoping to do something in September but a socially distanced camping get together at the farm is the most likely outcome. A decision to be made nearer the time.
Big thanks to all those who made it possible. Workshop leaders, quiz and games organisers and most of all Richard for providing the site.
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
It was lovely to attend my first Bungay. I don't tend to go to workshops (and I was working full time throughout anyway), but I enjoyed the tour of the farm.
As people keep telling me, it felt a lot like the old Bristol conventions.
Hey everyone!
Apparently I’m supposed to say hello and a bit about myself, so here goes:
Well that’s about it for my introduction. Hopefully I’ll be posting a regular practice log, which might be motivating, we’ll see :)

Welcome Kyle!
What does more serious (and TOO serious) mean for you?
I would have loved to learn springboard diving, but never found a good club in any of the places I lived. Maybe one day! Oh and I share your disgust for olives ;)
Little Paul - - Parent #
Oh good - I thought it was just me on the olives.
I’m told they’re an “acquired taste” but I fail to see why anyone would want to push through that learning phase
That's how I feel about coffee and beer. ;)
Olives, however, I have liked since I was a kid. At least the green ones. Now I also like black olives. (Then of course there are those cheap fake-black olives that some people put on pizzas and in salads... Those are not good.)
I too love olives, especially stuffed with a whole garlic clove or feta. I used to not like them but then I found out it was because I had first tasted the awful fake black ones first.
I also don't understand why people push through the disgust barrier for coffee, & cigarettes! Why on earth does anyone go through the effort required to get addicted to nicotine?!
Look what you've started Kyle!
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
I wouldn't have thought coffee was an acquired taste. I loved it the first moment I tried it, anyway.
As I've got older I've found that I like it more bitter. I now have no sugar and only a splash of milk. I can no longer drink instant coffee because, even without sugar, it tastes too sweet.
Beers are hugely variable. When I was a kid I was happy enough with manufactured lager. My first pint of bitter at the age of 19 was a revelation. That was the day I stopped drinking lager.
pumpkineater23 - - Parent #
I always loved boiled eggs and hated olives and then all of a sudden I loved olives and hated boiled eggs. It's almost as if some connection in my brain got them mixed up or something.
Daniel Simu - - Parent #
I'm with you on coffee and beer! Although I guess I did try to like beer, I was glad to give it up and not look back...
Cedric Lackpot - - Parent #
Bloody heretics the lot of you. Except Maria. Come the revolution, Maria gets to live.
I’d say that for me at least, "not TOO serious" means I want to keep having fun with juggling, and not become obsessed with being really good or getting certain tricks just because I feel they’re "necessary." I don’t think that’s going to happen, but I still sometimes like to say it just to remind myself. That’s not to say I don’t want to get better or achieve high goals, just that I'm to make sure I don't lose sight of what’s important to me.
Don't worry, Bungay Balls Up is definitely happening.
Coming of age at 21 years old.
I was on BBC Radio Suffolk today being interviewed about it.
Juggling slot starts at 1hr 9 mins.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p07y10yg
The best bit was the panic when the presenter dropped a satsuma on the mixing desk and wasn't sure what she had turned off.
You can also hear a loud clunk at one point when I hit myself on the head with a club. LOL.
Just read the link.
''All the usual splendidness: 24-hr big top, on-site catering, loos, showers, sauna, games-a-go-go, comfy chairs, croquet, a sky for throwing things up into, oodles of outdoor space, buttercups, the occasional passing wildlife, a great locale with loads of nearby attractions to visit. Show on the second Saturday, hopefully a return of Fight Night on the second Sunday. And anything you care to add.''
I must say, I'm particularly looking forward to watching people ''passing wildlife''.
Cedric Lackpot - - Parent #
? Egrets, I've had a few ... ?
I must accept some responsibility for people passing wildlife.
My venison stew was popular though.
Good job, Monte. I'm a bit surprised you managed to go the whole thing without mentioning trebuchets though.
Is this really the first thread on this year's BBU? We're slacking, obviously.
All the usual excellent stuff is planned, and with several other conventions missing or time-shifted this year, that's all the more reason for you all to make the effort to head to Suffolk this May. See you all in a field!
I didn't really get much time to talk about what we get up to at the Balls Up. No croquet, ping pong, board games or medieval siege weapons got a mention.
TBH, I don't think it will actually get us any new faces at this year's convention anyway. I'll try to remember to get Georgy to give us a plug nearer the time though.
Hopefully, some of the Broxford regulars will show up this year as they have no other full-length convention to go to. Be nice to see some of the old faces turn up.
Hmm, I may come to regret the confidence with which I stated BBU is definitely happening...
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
You'll just have to make sure everyone stays at least 2m apart at all times. Constant enforced use of hula hoops should help.
Richard Loxley - - Parent #
The hot tub is probably smaller than 2 metres diameter. A new policy of one out, one in? But we might need to make sure the water is over 60% alcohol to sanitise it :-)
In seriousness, discussions are currently ongoing on the helpers group to ensure the event is safe for all.
One possibility is changing the date to later in the year - this looks likely to be possible without affecting the viability of the event. Many thanks to all the helpers researching the possibilities and talking to our suppliers.
No decision has been reached yet - I think we'll all be monitoring the situation over the next couple of weeks, and seeing what the official advice is, to see what would be the best overall solution.
We are considering moving it to the beginning of September. One possible slot is 5th - 13th, It is still under discussion but we hope to make an announcement by the end of the month.
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
I really like that idea, because it means I'm more likely to be able to go.
When I registered for EJC, my order confirmation e-mail said:"We will send you an e-mail after Pre-registration finishes in July 2019, with more information about the event."With just over a week to go until the event, I'm getting a bit twitchy about not having had that e-mail yet. Has it been sent out and I've missed it (it's not in my spam folder), or have they not been sent yet? I imagined that the e-mail would be drafted in advance and ready to go as soon as pre-reg closed.
Richard Loxley - - Parent #
I haven't got such an email, and I haven't heard of anyone else getting one.
The organisers don't seem to read Juggling Edge, so I'd suggest either sending them an email or asking a question on the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ejc2019/
They have posted quite a few updates on Facebook to say that all you need to gain entry is your order number from your confirmation email, and they haven't mentioned anything about another email. So I suspect they may have forgotten they wrote that in the first email (or changed their minds).
Is there anything specific you wanted to know about the event? The website information is pretty comprehensive (I've read everything on there).
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
I don't know what might have been in the e-mail that I might want to know, because I haven't had the e-mail!
I actually drafted my post in the Facebook group first, but then decided to post here instead (I'm sure I've seen organisers posting here about EJC). Copying from the FB editor and pasting here didn't do much for the formatting :-(
I've followed your advice and posted to FB now.
Richard Loxley - - Parent #
Yeah, there have been a couple of posts here by EJC organisers, but they seem to post an announcement and then disappear, not answering any follow-on replies.
I think they were trying to announce stuff on as many forums as possible, but not necessarily regularly monitoring for replies.
Richard Loxley - - Parent #
I've just seen this posted on Facebook:We are worried that jugglers coming to EJC in Newark might not be getting their "more information" e-mail due to spam filters or other technical difficulties. So in case you have not received your e-mail. The contents were as follows:

If you arriving outside of these times you can call a local taxi firm - there may be some outside the station.
Newark Northgate is approximately 2 miles (3.5km) from the EJC 2019 site, but is not a pleasant route to walk
(There will be a similar arrangement for leaving the EJC on the 11th August - details will be posted at Info Point at EJC)
Arriving by Car
Do not trust google maps if it tries to send you to the EJC 2019 office in Nottingham, the correct event location is:
Newark Showground, Drove Lane (off Lincoln Road), Newark-on-Trent, NG24 2NY, UK ( 53.101355, -0.769513 )
You can follow the signs for the Newark Showground and the Air Museum
If you are arriving in a live in vehicle, caravan, camper etc then you need to go to Blue Gate - This is also where you need to go if you have ordered Electric hook up - Either live in vehicle or tent.
If you are camping in a tent then you need to go to Red Gate. Please park your car and walk to the gate. You will NOT be allowed to bring your car on to the campsite. There will be people around to help you carry your stuff - just ask nicely.
Red gate registration is open from around 10am till 9pm after that everyone should go to Blue gate . The security will let you in and register you in.
MORE
If you have any questions please look at the EJC 2019 website www.ejc2019.org to see if your question is answered there. We are very busy with last minute preparations so there is limited opportunity to answer e-mails.
EJC is run by jugglers for jugglers, it would not be possible without all the people volunteering, please remember to thank the volunteers who have put in a huge amount of time and see what volunteering you can do too.
See you in Newark!
EJA Pre-reg
For what it's worth, my mail server hasn't had any connection attempts from them in the last 3 weeks, so it seems the "technical difficulties" are at their end.
hello everyone,
Here I am back again to remind you all that EJC is fast approaching - too quickly for me now with mountains of work to still do! so I will be very quick.
I hope that all who want to come, can and have already purchased their tickets - but if you haven't you can still buy them online (ejc2019.org/tickets) and you will be able to buy on the door. (day tickets on the door not online)
My purpose today is tell you:
1- As you know EJC is run as a huge skill sharing event, so to that end we need people to share their skills by volunteering to run workshops - if you would like to run one or two or more please can you send Ben an email on workshops.ejc2019@gmail.com
2- The International juggling Associations Regional Competition (IRC) is holding its first European event at EJC this year and we need performers who would like to take part. The rules and all the information can be found over at ejc2019.org/irc there is prize money to be had and there is no age restriction. Acts will need to send an application in by the 6th July.
3- Just a little reminder that if you want some luxury at EJC this year we do have some additional extras available to order - lockers and electric hook up. They do cost I am afraid and hook up will only be available to order in advance.(cut off will be a couple of weeks before the start EJC) Again go to ejc2019.org/shop
4- We are looking at shuttle bus times for arrivals and departures from Newark rail stations so Dee will be running a survey soon on rail arrival times - more info soon on this.
5- If you have any questions please email me - I tend to post and run on here - Jane.ejc2019@gmail.com
Thanks for reading and look forward to seeing you in Newark in 58 days.... eeeeeekkkkkk
Further to my original post here is the survey that Dee has made, please take 30 seconds to answer
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBK8NMfZ3gCrDEPaCCgo9b_9WSK9ealDjW7IUcmFYFZrbl7g/viewform
Done using google forms as its still the quickest way to create a survey that wants time and date information (surprisingly difficult in other surveying tools) where you can force people to enter date time information in a consistent fashion...
No personal information requested. If arriving by car, filling in the form will help us understand when peak loads see likely to be at registration, but the primary reason for the survey is to look at when running a bus to the site from Newark may make sense.
Danny Colyer - - Parent #
It might be useful to ask whether people would be interested in using the service at times other than on arrival and leaving.
I want to go and explore Newark during the convention, I daresay other people will as well. I'd rather not drive in, and walking options seem limited (I have found a walking route that looks OK, but it's a bit circuitous). I'm not interested in using a bus service for arrival or departure, but I'd happily pay a small fee to get to and from Newark for a day trip. If that can be made to coincide with picking people up from the station, and bump up the numbers to make it viable, great.
Richard Loxley - - Parent #
NB. The survey wants the date in American MM/DD/YY format, so you might have some confused answers!
I had to wait until I had my diary in front of me because I knew I'm there Saturday to Sunday, but the date picker didn't show the day of the week so I couldn't fill it in without looking up the dates elsewhere.
Got there in the end though :-)
