PracticeLikeAnthony, 45 minutes

Day 14 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
Rainy morning in Amersham today, unfortunately. I had to go on the landing, which really isn’t ideal. I got around 40 catches of 5 balls with a balance and 30 catches of 5 ball mills thrown in my time. No room for pirouettes. My left shoulder was feeling a bit sore so 6 balls didn’t go well. Maybe because I did my practice in the afternoon/evening yesterday and the morning today I haven’t had time to recover? Either way it wasn’t great and I found the lack of space annoying so I stopped a bit early, and focussed on packing to go skiing. I thought instead I would use today’s log to reflect on if I have improved on each of the tricks I’ve been working on during the past two weeks, and if so how much.
I’m also debating switching up what order I do things in/what tricks I include. If you have a trick which you practice and enjoy or you think would help me improve, feel free to comment!
Warm up:
5 balls with a balance: Yes, slightly. I’ve got a new record since working on it but it doesn’t feel stable yet. I would like to keep on working on this and get it more solid.
5 ball mills: Yes, although barely. My record hasn’t changed much. I had thrown at least 10 rounds before and now I’ve thrown 12 (I may have thrown 12 before, I can’t remember for certain). I think my average run length has increased though, and the pattern is more robust, allowing me to try kick ups and multiplex starts.
Pirouettes- definitely! Maybe these are particularly suited to this method of practice, because if you work on them too much in one session you get tired and sweaty and stop improvig
3 ups out of 5 – definitely more consistent, out of both hands. I am better at linking them too.
5 ups are probably my most improved trick. I don’t think I had ever got more than one in a run before. Now I’ve got 4 in the same run. I can get 7+ in 3 minutes now, really pleased with this trick.
5 ball siteswaps:
744 maybe a bit? Hard to tell, I’m not very happy with it, my 7s are never in the right place, I always end up walking around.
645 I recon so, hadn’t worked on this much before
663 yes, although I haven’t necessarily enjoyed the process of it improving
753 yes, a little bit.
94444 definitely, although I hadn’t worked on it much before.
97531 definitely! I am pleased with my progress on this trick, and I had worked on it before.
(8x,4)(4,4)* definitely
6 ball async yes, although I still would like to improve more. The next stage for me is probably trying some tricks back to pattern.
Sync- maybe, maybe not. Would like a long run soon.
7 balls: Hmmm, tempting to say no. I haven’t broken my record and haven’t had many runs over half my record. Feels like I’m not improving at a rate which is noticeable over two weeks.
5 ball backcrosses definitely. I’m way better at these now. Still a long way to go though.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Probably not, why do I do this trick? (This is unduly negative, I probably have improved)
6 ball half shower. Yes, I have broken my record and it feels more relaxed

Day 13 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
It was a better juggling day in Amersham today, in that there were no hail storms! I made myself make a token effort to pack for skiing before I started practicing. This amounted to putting a collection of clothes on a bed, some of which I may pack tomorrow.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went very well today. Feeling nice and relaxed, got 60+ on a few runs.
Mills warm up was fine, and then 5 ball mills went well. I think I threw 36 in one run? Also did a 1 up 4 up multiples into 5 ball mills which was fun.
Pirouettes went very well today.. 3 ups out of 5 felt good, linked two together. I also landed the 3 up with one extra high, spin, two more up, spin trick. I really need a shorter name for this trick! I guess it’s a 2 stage 720? Maybe I’ll just call it that. Hopefully neither of the two people who read this log will take issue with that name.
5 ups feeling very very nice. I landed 8 out of my strong side in 3 minutes.I then got some out of my weak side in some amount of time (didn’t count exactly). Didn’t quite feel nice enough to try linking.
5 ball siteswaps:
20 rounds of 744 linked to a 3 up.
20 rounds of 645 to linked to a 3 up.
10 rounds of 663
10 rounds of 753
94444 felt reasonable again. I got 4 rounds thrown but not back to pattern. I tried the new 9447700 360 that Lewis showed me. I got it out of both hands.
97531 felt good. I got 5 rounds back to pattern once. New record! Yay! Also did 2 rounds linked to a 97522 360. Now I can be in those videos where loads of 10 year olds stand in a row and do this trick simultaneously at the WJF.
(8x,4)(4,4)* was feeling fine, 10 rounds back to pattern I think.
6 ball async was feeling a bit lethargic, kept getting to 70 catches and colliding.
I tried a few 6 ball siteswaps briefly. 9555 felt reasonable, although my 5s were higher than my 6s in the base pattern. This probably shouldn’t be the case.
I tried 8844 a few times and a 4 up. Both felt challenging up manageable, didn’t manage to get back to a stable pattern though.
I threw b97531 for jokes, but then actually all came back to my hands. I probably made 6-8 throws after, but got too excited at the prospect of landing it and dropped.
Got 80+ catches of sync. Landed the transition a few times.
I kicked up from 5 to 6 a couple of times to a stable pattern.
Got 12 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit).
I forgot to do 77772, will do tomorrow.
7 balls: 50 catches in one run! Yes! I’m definitely getting better. Going to get a mega run tomorrow, mark my words!
5 ball backcrosses were good today. I got 4 in a row back to pattern! Woop!
5 ball half shower with backcross. Feeling dodgy, not sure why I bother with this trick.
6 ball half shower. I felt tired, not sure I got much over 60.

Day 13 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
Less than an ideal day for juggling, I had to abort my practice due to a hail storm. Pretty funny though, I guess. Went onto the landing and adapted my practice. I am writing this a day later though so can’t remember exactly what happened.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went well today. I believe I got 60 catches in a few different runs. Now that I’ve broken the 50 barrier once I feel like I can consistently get above it.
Mills warm up was fine, and then 5 ball mills went well. I got 30+ catches in one run and I kicked up from 4 to a relatively stable feeling 5 twice or so. I also tried the fun multiplex start, this is keeping me motivated.
Pirouettes went very well today until the heavens opened. I got 7 5 ups in 3 minutes, even with hail going into my eye causing me to drop on at least a few attempts.
5 ball siteswaps:
20 + rounds of 744 kneeling down.
20 rounds of 645 to drop.
663 felt pretty nice today! I got 10 rounds.
753 was feeling less nice, I got 9 rounds to drop I think.
6 ball async was ok I think, I can’t really remember… I should do my logs on the same day as the practice.
6 ball sync was also probably fine. Or at least if it wasn’t no one will ever know…
I kicked up from 5 to 6 a couple of times to a stable pattern.
Got 12 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit).
I forgot to do again 77772, will do tomorrow.
7 balls: Around 30 catches in one run I think. The timing as the start felt a bit off.
5 ball backcrosses were good today. 2 in a row back to pattern, starting out of both sides.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Feeling fairly nice today, I got quite a few back to pattern
6 ball half shower. Another I got 100 catches again, it feels relaxed.

Day 12 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
It is another lovely juggling day in Amersham, so I was eager to get out and juggle. I’m also looking forward to going along to the Camden juggling club later on for a bit of passing. There was a red kite circling overhead during parts of my practice today and yesterday, when I first moved to this area they were endangered, it’s great they’ve made a recovery.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went very well today. I so nearly got 100 catches! I was trying to go for a clean collect but stopped too early so I ended up with 98 catches clean. Still a massive improvement, it was feeling really good.
Mills warm up was fine, and then 5 ball mills went well. I got 30+ catches in one run and I kicked up from 4 to a relatively stable feeling 5 twice or so. Also tried a fun multiplex start for 5 ball mills. I think I’ll keep doing these just to mix it up a bit and so that I don’t get frustrated with this trick.
Pirouettes went very well today.. 3 ups out of 5 felt good, linked two together. Also tried a new trick I saw on a WJF video yesterday, it’s a 3 up with the 3rd one extra high and then two more after you’ve spun once, and then spin again. Felt easier than I was expecting
5 ups feeling very very nice. I landed 7 out of my strong side in 3 minutes, including 3 in the same run! I then got 3 out of my weak side in a minute. Might try and link two tomorrow, I don’t think it will happen but it could be fun. Also debating putting a 1 high 4 low in their.
5 ball siteswaps:
30 + rounds of 744 to drop, then 10 rounds linked to a 3 up.
20 rounds of 645 to drop and then 10 rounds linked to a 3 up.
663 felt pretty nice today! I got 20 rounds, yay!
753 was feeling less nice, I got 9 rounds to drop I think.
94444 felt reasonable again. I got 4 rounds thrown but not back to pattern. I tried the new 9447700 360 that Lewis showed me. I got it out of both hands.
97531 felt good. I got 4 rounds back to pattern once.
(8x,4)(4,4)* wasn’t feeling too great, I’m not sure I got much more than 6 rounds thrown. Also tried (8x,4)(4,4)(8,4)(4,4)* a few times, it’s quite fun.
6 ball async definitely regressed to the mean. I got 95 catches clean on one run though so not too bad (I only collected because there was a collision I couldn’t recover from. Not sure if this counts as “clean”)
Another I got 120 catches again, it feels relaxed.

Day 11 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
I woke up in Leeds after a great weekend and after breakfast with my friend John I got on a train to London. It’s going to be tight to make it back in time for an hour of juggling before I start tutoring, but Anthony Gatto never missed a practice session because he had to tutor maths (probably) and neither will I! I got back to Amersham just in time and it’s perfect conditions, no wind, not too cold, still light
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went reasonably well today, got 45 ish catches a few times. I think I have 50 as a mental barrier/target in my head and I get excited when I get near it and then drop. Not sure why, I’ve got over 50 before. I’m sure I’ll get it soon.
Mills warm up was fine, and then 5 ball mills went well. I got 30+ catches in one run and I kicked up from 4 to a relatively stable feeling 5 twice or so.
Pirouettes went very well today, tried to really focus on technique with the 3 ball stuff. 3 ups out of 5 felt good, linked two together.
5 ups feeling very very nice. I landed 7 out of my strong side in 2 and a half minutes and then 3 out of my weak side in a minute. Makes me think my weak side isn’t actually that weak and I should practice it more
5 ball siteswaps:
40 rounds of 744 to drop.
20 rounds of 645 linked to a bad 3 up attempt, which I didn’t land
663 felt pretty nice today! I think I’ve been doing the 6s way lower than I should. I got 12+ rounds a few times.
753 got 12 rounds.
94444 felt good again. I got 4 rounds thrown but not back to pattern. I tried the new 9447700 360 that Lewis showed me. I got it out of both hands.
97531 felt fine. 2 rounds back to pattern, starting out of both hands. Tried for a few longer runs but it wasn’t happening.
(8x,4)(4,4) got 10 rounds back into (6x,4) first time.

I smashed my 6 ball async record! 208 catches, woo! I was tempted to collect at 200, maybe I should have so it was clean rather than to drop. This feels like a big milestone for me, I felt very focused and managed to scoop nicely so there weren’t any collisions. Some wandering, but you can’t have it all.
Got 80+ catches of sync. Landed the transition a few times.
I kicked up from 5 to 6 a couple of times to a stable pattern.
Got 12 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit). I tried the 773 entry but it felt a bit weird.
I got maybe 8 rounds of 77772. I would have spent longer if I had more time
7 balls: Around 35 catches in one run I think. A few nice runs.
5 ball backcrosses were sweet today. 3 in a row back to pattern, starting out of both sides. Might get a flash to and from pattern soon!
5 ball half shower with backcross. Feeling fairly nice today, I got 3 alternating normal throws and backcross throws.
6 ball half shower. Another new record! 125!

Day 10 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
I just about managed to wake up early with Cat, and after a coffee I walked to the squash courts, where Lewis was already juggling. I got there at maybe 7.20 or so and was still fairly sleep, despite a large mug of coffee, so this may not be the most accurate log ever, and I am writing it the day after. Also did some fun passing with Lewis after I was done with the solo stuff. We did some body throws and then a 6 up 360 out of 6 club ultimates.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went ok according to my notes I got about 40 catches.
Mills warm up was fine, but then 5 ball mills didn’t go too well, I got around 20 catches.
Pirouettes went very well today, tried to really focus on technique with the 3 ball stuff. 3 ups out of 5 felt good, linked two together, both ways
5 ups feeling very nice. I landed 6 in my allocated time, a new best. I then landed one out of my weaker side within a minute, I should work on this more.
5 ball siteswaps:
20 rounds of 744 to pattern.
20 rounds of 645 to pattern
663 felt dodgy again, although Lewis was sympathetic, saying it’s a tough pattern.
753 got 12 rounds.
94444 felt good again. I got 4 rounds thrown but not back to pattern. I tried the new 9447700 360 that Lewis showed me. It will be fun to work on
97531 felt fine. 2 rounds back to pattern, starting out of both hands. Tried for a few longer runs but it wasn’t happening.
(8x,4)(4,4) got 8 rounds back into (6x,4).

I got a 100+ run of 6 ball asyn.
Got 60 ish catches of sync. Landed the transition a few times.
I kicked up from 5 to 6 a couple of times to a stable pattern.
Got 10 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit). I tried the 773 entry but it felt a bit weird.
I got maybe 8 rounds of 77772. I would have spent longer if I had more time
7 balls: didn’t feel very nice, my notes say ‘not good’. I think I was struggling to get 20 catches.
5 ball half shower with backcross, felt difficult, Lewis sympathised, and said he had tried working on half shower where you penguin catch the high throws.
6 ball half shower. I got over 60 catches, apparently.

Day 9 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
Cat and I decided it was a bit cold outside in Leeds today so we opted to book a squash court at the nearby leisure centre. Just as we were about to turn up Lewis Kennedy showed up! He had also booked a squash court for exactly the same time, so we all went onto his court to practice. He seemed interested in my practice structure, and knows tons of tricks. At several points during the session he suggested cool variations I hadn’t thought of and had some useful tips. He has a really knack for making me feel positive about my juggling, and said some very kind things about my technique looking good for 6 and 7 balls.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went well, I got roughly 50 catches.
Mills warm up was fine, but then 5 ball mills didn’t go too well, I got around 20 catches. Lewis confirmed it is indeed a tough trick though.
Pirouettes went very well today. 3 ups out of 5 felt good, linked two together, both ways
5 ups feeling very nice. I landed 5 in my allocated time, a new best. I then landed one out of my weaker side, I should work on this more.
5 ball siteswaps:
20 rounds of 744 to pattern.
20 rounds of 645 to pattern
663 felt dodgy, 10 rounds back to pattern
753 got 10 rounds.
94444 felt good, I got 6 rounds back to pattern. Lewis also suggested a cool way to transition back to pattern. Do a few rounds, then on the last round throw 9447700 and 360 to go back into 5.
97531 felt fine. 2 rounds back to pattern, starting out of both hands. Tried for a few longer runs but it wasn’t happening.
When warming up 3 in one hand for 6 balls including high low shower Lewis showed me a cool 2 up out of high low shower. He knows so many tricks, seems like he could basically look at any pattern I was doing and tell me a cool trick or variation.

I got a 126 catch run of 6 balls asyn and two cosequtive 100+ runs
Got 80 ish catches of sync. Landed the transition a few times. Lewis said transitioning helped him with his 6 more than anything.
I kicked up from 5 to 6 a couple of times to a stable pattern.
Got 10 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit) Lewis told me you can transition in with 773 which feels cool. It also reminded me about 7733 and 773355 as siteswaps.
5 ball backcrosses felt ok, I think I might get 3 back to pattern soon.
7 balls: felt ok, Lewis was complimentary about my technique. I think I had a run with 40 cathces.
6 ball half shower. I got lots of runs over 80.

Day 8 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
I’m in Leeds today with Cat, and we went to a lovely ruined abbey to practice. Lots of dogs and children walking past. According to one girl on a bike, we are both amazing. A bit windy at the start when I was doing the balance stuff, but pretty decent conditions overall.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went reasonably well today, got 40 catches.
Mills warm up was fine, and then 5 ball mills went ok. Maybe got over 20 catches once- still waiting for a breakthrough with this one.

Pirouettes went very well today, tried to really focus on technique with the 3 ball stuff. 3 ups out of 5 felt good, linked two together once.
5 ups feeling very nice. I got four in my time, including the first one. I always get really excited when I land the first one and then expect to land the next 10 for some reason, which never happens, maybe one day.
5 ball siteswaps:
10 rounds of 744 back to pattern and then 30sh rounds to drop, I think.
20 rounds of 645 back to pattern
663 felt a bit dodgy, as usual, I got 10 rounds, not back to pattern though.
753 got 10 rounds.
94444 felt good again. I got 4 rounds thrown but not back to pattern.
97531 felt good too. 2 rounds back to pattern, starting out of both hands. Nearly got 4 rounds back to pattern a few times.
(8x,4)(4,4) got 8 rounds.

I think I broke my 6 ball async record! There was one point where I’m not sure if I added 10 on by mistake, but assuming I didn’t I got 130 catches. Cat was also counting and thinks I got 128, so I’m going to count it. Felt really nice, I was just focussing on avoiding collisions, my attention didn’t wander at all which it sometimes does.
Got 80+ catches of sync. Landed the transition a few times.
I kicked up from 5 to 6 a couple of times to a stable pattern, although I think there were lots of dogs walking past while I was trying this so I didn’t spend too long on it
Got 12 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit).
I remembered the 77772 is a good warm up for 7 so I got 6 rounds to collect before trying 7.
7 balls: Around 30 catches in one run I think. Didn’t feel amazing, I kept going a bit longer than I should have because I wanted a nice run, not today though.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Feeling a bit inconsistent today. Got maybe 3 or 4 in the same run, but they weren’t falling into my hand I was moving around to catch them.
6 ball half shower. I think I got 80 catches in a few runs but nothing over 100.

Day 7 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
Woke up early ish (by my standards) so that I had time to practice before getting the train to Leeds. Then got distracted by booking flights to Germany so was running short of time. This may or may not have made me forget some fairly essential items which I am now having to buy in Leeds.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went reasonably well today, got 40 catches.
Mills warm up was fine, and then 5 ball mills went ok. I got over 20 catches once.

Pirouettes went very well today, tried to really focus on technique with the 3 ball stuff. 3 ups out of 5 felt good, but didn’t link two together.
5 ups feeling very nice. I got four in my time, nearly 5. I am pleased with my progress on this trick. I’m only practicing out of my strong hand at the moment though. I should probably change this, especially if I want to link 2 together some day.
5 ball siteswaps:
744 felt great today, I got 50 rounds, linked to a 3 up, back to pattern
15 rounds of 645 back to pattern
663 felt a bit dodgy, as usual, I got 10 rounds, back to pattern though.
753 got 10 rounds.
94444 felt good again. I got 4 rounds back to pattern.
97531 felt good too. 2 rounds back to pattern, starting out of both hands. Nearly got 4 rounds back to pattern a few times.
(8x,4)(4,4) got 10 rounds back to pattern
80+ catches to 6 ball async, and 60+ of sync.
I landed the transition a few times.
I kicked up from 5 to 6 a couple of times to a stable pattern.Got 12 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit).

7 balls: Around 30 catches in a couple of runs, not amazing.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Felt ok today, I got 3 alternating.
6 ball half shower. I think I got 80 catches in a few runs but nothing over 100.

Day 6 of trying to practice using the same method Anthony Gatto did. See my forum post for details of what this involves and my rationale for wanting to do it:
Went to the Camden juggling club yesterday evening, was a lot of fun passing with James. I was amused that he said he hadn’t done any proper passing for ages and then suggested we start with 789 as the first pattern we did. Got back to Amersham, a bit damp on the ground and gloomy, but not raining and not too windy, so was able to juggle outside.
Warm up: Did all the moving about with a balance stuff, all three balance points. 5 balls with a balance went reasonably well today, got around 50 catches.
Mills warm up was fine, and then 5 ball mills went ok. Maybe got over 20 catches once- it’s ok but just feels like you need to be really accurate with this trick to get it to run. Might ask some people who can do it for some tips.

Pirouettes went very well today, tried to really focus on technique with the 3 ball stuff. Making sure I finished throwing before spinning and bringing my arms into my body when I span. 3 ups out of 5 felt good, linked two together once, I think.
5 ups feeling very nice. This is a trick which has definitely benefitted from being done for a couple of minutes every day. Landed four in my allocated time, but lots of other plausible looking attempts where I just fumbled the first one or something. Feeling positive about this.

5 ball siteswaps:
10 rounds of 744 back to pattern and then 30sh rounds to drop, I think.
20 rounds of 645 back to pattern
663 felt nice ish, for 663, for 10 rounds back to pattern.
753 got 10 rounds back to pattern.
94444 felt good again. Got a round straight into a 3 up 360. I also got 4 rounds back to pattern.
97531 felt good too. 2 rounds back to pattern, starting out of both hands. Nearly got 4 rounds back to pattern a few times.
(8x,4)(4,4) got 6 rounds back to pattern, felt nice.

Got 110 ish catches of 6 balls async. Felt really nice, I was just focussing on avoiding collisions, my attention didn’t wander at all which it sometimes does. Got 80+ catches of sync. Landed the transition a few times. The kick up from 5 to 6 was feeling really nice today, got into a stable pattern a bunch of times.
Got 12 ish rounds of 771 back to pattern in my allocated minute (66 entry 661 exit)
7 balls: Around 40 catches in one run I think. Pleased with how it’s feeling, optimistically waiting for a record breaking run at some point, maybe in the next week.
Landed 2 5 ball backcrosses back to pattern starting out of both hands. Main problem is getting them to come over my shoulder rather than having to reach back for them.
5 ball half shower with backcross. Feeling pretty good. I don’t have the same problem here as I do for 5 ball backcross, instead it’s that it comes to central, almost crossing back to the hand that threw it. Will try and fix this tomorrow.
6 ball half shower. Got over 100 catches again, possibly 110. It’s feeling very nice, almost like 5 ball half shower now in terms of how relaxed I am rather than battling against it.

Total practice time: 60 minutes

Location: Amersham
