Would 10 balls be a national record for Canada? I think I'll get it soon so I want to know If I could title my video "National Record" when I get it.
oh, no one .. maybe ask the other way 'round:
Is there (even) any Canadian world-class numbers jugglers?
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
I think Mike has done 9. There was 1 guy that was supposedly pretty good but all his videos are gone.
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
Also I hope to be world class in the next few years.
Mike Moore that is, I'm guessing .. if so, lets page him: Hey Mike Moore, how do you do! (if that works)
Mike Moore - - Parent #
I haven't flashed ten. I tried it for one practice session and got kind of close, though!
I've got a few local friends who might have, but I don't think they've ever posted a video of it.
Hard to know about the Quebec/Montreal circus people. There are a few that I'm positive have/could easily flash (or maybe even qualify) 10 but I don't know of some of their nationalities.
Johnathan, you might message Norbi Whitney because he is far more in tune with what the Quebec jugglers are up to.
Mike Moore - - Parent #
Tangentially related: Matan Presberg's first 10b flash was in Canada, at the fest I made/ran!
https://youtu.be/SOO0FLqRjdM?start=101
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
I'm looking for records by Canadians with video evidence. Matan's flash is cool, but that would be the same as me going to America and doing it.
What about any of the Quebec circus school folks?
Of course many of them are not Canadian, ...
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
Are there vids?
No idea, sorry. I have no idea who might be relevant.
Just a thought that there might be something from the circus school community.
Mathis Brisson has flashed 11 balls: https://www.instagram.com/p/CNJT_RTFqFX/
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
Well I plan on doing that sometime soon as well!
Mike Moore - - Parent #
Ah, I forgot about Mathis! I also made the cardinal sin of forgetting about Philippe Dupuis, who has such a strong 9b it's unbelievable to me that he hasn't flashed at least 10 balls.
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
We now have another Canadian 10 baller: https://youtu.be/ZjDTRMluv_g
Mike Moore - - Parent #
Wooo, congrats!
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
Thanks! Hope to do 11 sometime when I get new balls.
Hahaha :oD °yay!° .. and another Canadian jugglebeast, and you're youngest among them!
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
I am a somewhat low juggler(my 7b qualify was done really low). My low 9 ball flash wasn't as clean as this though.
Johnathan Mundell - - Parent #
I got an async flash, even lower, but still clean: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CbQdhdrDoSr/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Bath Upchuck 2018: Should I make a Juggling Edge event listing for this, or are there any Upchuckers who are actually involved with the convention here, who want to do it?
No need, I've just created one. Thanks for the reminder! #BathUpChuck2018
For some reason, I thought the hashtag would link to the event page...
Bath UpChuck 2016 (UK juggling convention)
UpChuck is the annual juggling convention organised by the University of Bath juggling society, Gravity Vomit. This year it's just a week away on Saturday 20th February!
The convention is hosted in the spacious Founders' Sports Hall on campus, which is perfect for all kinds of juggling and for the second year the show will be in the recently built Arts Theatre. We have a great day of workshops, combat and juggling games planned. Oddballs, the juggling equipment supplier, will also be in attendance for another year! The show has come together wonderfully; being compèred by the excellent Matthew Tiffany and featuring acts by Frederike Gerstner, Eddy Bacon & Tom Derrick to name a few.
This year tickets are £8 for the day only, £6 for the show only and £12 for both combined. Under 12s are eligible for free day entry. The day will run from 10:30-18:30 and the show from 19:30-21:00.
You can buy tickets before the day and here's the FaceBook event. To get the combined price just add both the show and day items to your basket before checkout.
#UpChuck2016 see you there!

Can someone give me the stats on Upchuck please?
Who performed at the Gala?
from Dee's list of helpful statistics:
* Performer Name
* Gender
* Convention [name (location) and year]
* List of those involved in organising the line-up of the show
* Act Type
* Headliner / Main Act?
* Host
* Solo Act (Yes / No)
* If Not Solo Act: Number in Group and Proportion of females in group
* Total number of performers in show
Nice to have:
* Number of Appearances by that performer in the show
* Number of previous appearances in show (are they a "regular")
* Approximate distance traveled by performer [more for small regional conventions - are organisers selecting from a much smaller group of jugglers].
* Venue restrictions [e.g. was rigging possible in show venue?]
Alright, first off........@Tom W!!! YOU DA BOSS!!!!
secondly............Is Willy Colombaioni a fake? https://objectepisodes.com/t/those-balances-are-obviously-fake/189
like........he can't be!! right??? I've watched his videos and they look real..........
Damn, I've even had a picture of him juggling five clubs as my desktop background!!!!! He was my freaking hero when I first started juggling!!!!!!!!
*Ethan sobs into his hands* "Who's next?" *sniff* "Anthony gatto?".........*Ethan collapses on the floor in a heap of tears and flesh*...........
I'd have to agree with Luke in that post. The videos do look fake, suspiciously filmed and he's done nothing to prove otherwise. However, this has been discussed to death already.

96. I'm quite pleased about my score :)
Edited into a competition!
93
Also please list your object manipulation skills for question 22. I couldn't really think of anything that qualified. Unless you count ribbon twirling.
Mike Moore - - Parent #
I included dice and cup stacking for those. Funny, because those two were the difference between our scores (I got 95)
103
Time to acquire some of those props in the '3 tricks with these' section...
What void? 104? Just you wait 'til next year!
I've got the feeling that there are probably a few "other" skills that are escaping my memory, and I can't really remember exactly what numbers passing I got up to 20 years ago. So I could probably "finesse" my score up a few notches or so, but ... Meh. You're welcome to overtake me. :-)
Little Paul - - Parent #
83 I think, although I mostly answered "have you ever" rather than "can you" - if forced to take this as a real life test today, I'd score much lower.
christhejuggler - - Parent #
91 and i think that this is a nice Way to compare
christhejuggler - - Parent #
thank u :)
Daniel Simu - - Parent #
Nice start, but it might need to be rewritten. I guessed all the passing records except for the club passing, and I am disappointed I get only 2 points for diabolo playing while I believe that I am half a good diabolo player as a toss juggler (juggling is worth about 60 points I guess..) Also, why is devilstick used twice (how many & can do 3 tricks)?
Either way, I score 94
jamesfrancis - - Parent #
98. So close to triple figures...
jamesfrancis - - Parent #
I think I may have embarassingly actually included Poi within my count. 3 beat, butterfly and overhead twirly things count as tricks right?
I think waving poi round really fast without hitting anything counts as a trick (so I just need to learn two more tricks).
60
Thought I would have a higher score...guess I have some work to do!
You guys in the 100s are beasts!!
108 but there might be more as I couldn't at this time think of other manipulation tricks other than those listed. Card throwing? Beer Mat stacking? table tennis 2 bats one ball? there are probably quite a few more weird and wonderful things I've tried and can do at least 3 tricks.
This test is still way too biaised towards normal juggling. Why flash and qualify? With the exception of rings which I never practice I've qualified everything I've flashed and it feels like I'm getting double scoring because of it. Also if you can juggle n balls it isn't hard to pass 2n balls, similarly with clubs and rings. I've passed 8 rings and qualified it on the only occasion I tried it which shouldn't give me 8 points when I am probably the worst ring juggler on the Edge.
Adding to this skew is the weakness of the points awarded to other skills. There are way more people can juggle 5 balls than propellor 2 devil sticks and yet one of these skills is worth 2.5x the other skill.
Nigel
If you actually want to qualify 2n objects, it's actually really hard. For example, the highest number of balls successfully passed is 16 (2 * 8) whereas the world record for solo is 11.
"There are way more people can juggle 5 balls than propellor 2 devil sticks and yet one of these skills is worth 2.5x the other skill."
This is a logical fallacy. There are less people who can do it, but that does not make it more difficult. Less people learn to propeller two devilsticks than pass a maths degree, so is a maths degree easier?
These things aside, the test is very biased towards toss juggling. Toss juggling ability is quite well measured through maximum numbers though. I'm not sure what fair points system you could use for (to carry on the example) devilstick? This test really needs input from people who do multiple to compare skills fairly too. 2 diabolos is worth less points than a 3 ball cascade, which seems to very much underrate diabolo, however, exactly how much should 2 diabolos be worth? 3 points? 4 points? And what of 3 diabolos? And 4?
Little Paul - - Parent #
*cough* fewer *cough*
105
Although I don't think I am particularly versatile, my juggling skills are reasonably broad but involve reasonably high numbers. There are a still a great many skills on that list that are a 'NO' for me.
Also, the 'other manipulation skills' is a really hard one to quantify. I can't for the life of me think of anything to list there. But with all the conventions I used to go to there must be a decent number of obscure manipulation skills I toyed with and managed a few tricks with at some point in time.
Little Paul - - Parent #
Also, I'm pretty sure that given 10 minutes I could come up with 3 tricks with any object I was given (Must weigh more than an ounce, less than 10 pounds and be no bigger than a breadbox - obviously)
Now that sounds like an interesting challenge, I am assuming you are not allowed to use this object for a manipulation that is typically associated with a different, yet similar, object? e.g. contact juggling an orange doesn't count.
I'll have to hunt around for the most featureless and un-inspiring object I can find!
Hmmm... the first object that I cast my eyes upon that fulfills your weight / size requirements, that you are also sure to have, is a computer keyboard.
I await a video, by 16:11 BST - sharp.
Little Paul - - Parent #
Only just seen your post, but yeah! Ok! Game on... I'll go dig out the camera and see what happens
Little Paul - - Parent #
5 minutes to raid my junk box and find a keyboard (didn't want to injure myself with my IBM Model M keyboard :)
10 minutes of filming, about half an hour of faffing about with my computer installing video editing software, codecs etc, cutting out the three "best" tricks from the footage I had, 10 minutes to edit/upload it and here we are:
https://youtu.be/YPCi8pN6TkY
I forgot to turn off the autofocus (which is a bit mad on this camera) and I wouldn't have said the tricks were anything special, but there they are. 3 tricks with a computer keyboard, found in 10 minutes.
They're actually out of order, the last trick was the one I filmed first, and in the middle trick you can hear the 10 minute alarm going off
Nicely done!
I was surprised that throwing the keyboard up in the air then typing out a quick post before catching it again wasn't one of them. :)
Little Paul - - Parent #
not on that keyboard... eeew...
I 8> my Model M too much

Freaking hilarious :')
Time to increment your score by one. Keep going like this and you will have a massive versatilely score!

108 is my score.
For the last question I counted fingerboard, skateboard, remote/cell phone flipping, and gyro ring.

Roflcopter - - Parent #
now it's 49

So some people mentioned including scores for things they might no longer being able to do, but I wanted to do the opposite - for some of the things I reckon I could do them but haven't e.g. I haven't qualified 10 ring passing, but reckon I could!
I didn't score that though ;)
Considering I don't know what half those things are/mean, I don't think I need to need to take this test to know that I know nuuuuuuthing.
Also I have never tried rings at all, and my passing and club juggling is... poor.
This competition has now ended. Here are the results:
I built a rola bola today.
Then I built a box to keep it in, using the lid as the board. Most of my useful props fit in comfortably, viz: 4 clubs, diabolo, whole mess of balls, a couple sets of poi.
I also finished my stilts, but am waiting for some company before I start playing with those.
It was a good day.
https://blog.martinb.za.net/2013/construction-day/ has a couple. :)
Any plans to modify it for ease of moving about (handles, wheels, radio control)?
Also, have a pea roast.
I have added handles, yes.
I might borrow a skateboard and strap it onto the bottom. ;)
Little Paul - - Parent #
you need to add one of these to it:

Siteswap validator
Hi, I have tried to make a siteswap validator because I realised that I need it for some other things I want to do. Before starting I had no idea how to write a validator that would work with vanilla, synchronous and multiplex patterns. After reading up on siteswaps I think I have got my way through it and have made a validator that I can't trick but I am unsure if it is infallible.
It only checks the 'average rule' and the 'countdown rule' as well as some syntax things. Is that enough?
Any help appreciated, thanks
When going to your website I get the pop-up warning:Do you want to run this application ?
An unsigned application from the location below is requesting permission to run.
Location: http//juggling-records.com/
Running this application may be a security risk
You might want to fix that in case it scares away the more wary internetist
(warning appeared on both firefox, opera & chrome browsers)
Thanks. I think that is a Java message (although I'm not sure because I am unable to recreate it). I have removed Juggling Lab from the sidebar. Would you mind looking again to see if the message is still there?
On the Edge I just use a stripped down version of the code I used for the TWJC Siteswap Calculator (code behind it is here).
I just do pattern matches to check syntax, then a countdown test.
I couldn't find any misvalidations. But * is deinitely a valid character & is very popular!
Thanks. I will look through that code. At a glance it looks like it will be very helpful - especially with regular expressions, which I know little to nothing about. Also I can't believe I forgot about asterisks!
It seems to work for most vanilla siteswaps, although some synchronous patterns have issues. (6x,4) are incorrectly reported as being valid. Also, you can have more than 3 numbers inside the brackets of a synchronous siteswap, and it just ignores the extra numbers, like (4,4,8).
However, I like the fact that the commas in synchronous notation are optional—I'd like to see people stop using them altogether, personally.
Juggling Journal
I was talking to Orinoco in the Beta talk section about a possible juggling journals section. So, I am going to try it out. I was thinking of individual practice logs for each user (WJF used to have this but they have seemingly disappeared). I thought it might get confusing making individual topics in Small Talk, so, for now I'd like to try making a topic where anyone can post practice logs and see if it catches on and where it goes from here...
So, I started practicing juggling heavily in about late 2005 / early 2006. I practiced obsessively for about 4 years, and had gotten decent. I could qualify 7 most of the time, perform with 6 without too much fear, and run 5 ball siteswaps.
Sadly, I stopped juggling, except for a few juggling gigs, in about early 2009. I am trying to get back into it and a practice log motivated me heavily on the WJF forum, so I tried it here.
Unfortunately, my skills need work. Last practice session, I was able to do some 5 ball siteswaps for a couple rounds back into the cascade. The cascade doesn't feel as good as it used to, either, so hopefully it irons itself out. I was also able to, after warm up, do 20 catches of 6 async without much trouble. Flashing 7 was not too hard either. I also was able to run some 4 ball siteswaps without too much trouble. Definitely needed warm up though.
I am using 3 inch ~180g sportco balls, but my arms are not conditioned as well as they used to be, so I ordered some 2.75 inch 136g rag bags. I'll use those for 6 and up but will try to stay with the larger ones for 5 if they don't fatigue me too much...
Alrighty, there is my input for today. Going to try to practice an hour everyday and see where this goes.
Jamie
Sounds like a good idea. I used a similar feature on the UK Climbing website where I logged my climbing as well as my juggling practice sessions. You should be able to see this without an account.
https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/e.php?d=2012&u=95498

Interesting system, I currently do something similar (but paper based) for various things (but not juggling, as its been a long time since I last did any of that outside a fest)
I keep meaning to find a non paper way to do this, but haven't yet found anything suitable. The climbing one looks like what im after, but as i havent climbed anything in about 10years it's feel wrong to use that!
I was thinking about this more last night at TWJC & came up with a few more ideas myself
I've actually spent a fair time thinking about how a computer/web-based version could be made to work in the most efficient and useful manner possible, and I've got quite a lot of ideas on the matter. I've been working on it as a small side project for a little while now, although my free time has been somewhat limited as of late. I'd like to share my ideas when I've got a little further with it, but it's still in the development stage at the moment.
I definitely agree that something with many more features than a journal would rock...
Something like that link would be way cool and very useful tool. I use an excel spreadsheet logbook thing that was originally created as a running log. But, having something online would be way better. Tied to the records section here somehow and some sort of progress charting and some silly things like % of life juggling type stats would be fun.
cheers - Warren
A web developer's journal system just popped up on Wordpress. It's called Capsule and it's a wordpress theme that lets you journal with @project and #hashtag indexing. I haven't tried it yet, perhaps next week. https://alexking.org/blog/2013/04/24/capsule-the-developers-code-journal.
Metadata is a love note to the future.

interesting idea certainly. I might have other uses for that. Hmm...
This got me interested too. While trying out ideas I came up with this last night as a sort of test/demo: https://juggling-records.com/log_test.php. Any thoughts?
Blimey, we're all at it!
Here's what I came up with today.
https://www.jugglingedge.com/log.php
thegoheads - - Parent #
I really like this idea. I'm curious to see how this develops and I will likely start a journal here too. My only input is that it shouldn't be too complicated. We can use words to describe the finer details of our practices. If there are far too many graphs, charts, drop-down menus, etc I would likely find it too troublesome to bother learning how to use. I guess a lot of people like things to be convoluted/fancy so maybe I'm the minority here.
...minority maybe, but fortunately your opinion appears to match that of the lead programmer! ;)
That looks good. I like the graphical view, similar to the UK Climbing one. I would suggest you add the ability to add new custom session types with new colours. This could include other juggling sessions (such as 'outside in the park') or could include sessions of training for juggling such as weights or cardiovascular.
Also, it would be great if it links into the records section. So you see a symbol for the days when a record was broken.
Also, I'm not sure you really need to show the time of day in the graphical view. Most people will only have one session per day. You could then shown a whole month or the whole year in a single view instead of just one week. The time of the juggling session would still be displayed in the session info. Or maybe the user could choose to view by week, month or year to get different views.
Thanks. I will definitely have the coloured categories fully customisable. With regards to it linking in with the records section I will have it do so but I am not sure to what extent just yet. I think you are right that it would be better showing may be just a month in the graphical view - I will try it out. I also wanted to have an alternative 'feed' view that just shows all the logs one after another, public or private settings and the ability to 'subscribe' to other jugglers' logs. Is subscribing to a log something that people would want or are they typically not exciting enough for others to be interested in reading?
In the spirit of the topic (though I am quite happy people are discussing new ways to track progress) I'll post another practice session summary.
Today my 5 ball cascade felt good and is getting back up to what I would call solid. My arm muscles are still a bit out of shape, so I am getting sore and tired more easily. This should go away as I practice regularly again.
3 in 1 hand felt pretty good in each hand, but still not as good as it used to feel.
4 ball siteswaps felt better than earlier in the week, but still could improve. 74414 was feeling very good.
6 balls - felt better than earlier in the week, did 20 catches on the first couple tries. Still needs word.
7 balls - took a couple tries to flash :( which is not good for me but I believe it has to do with using heavier balls than my arms can handle right now.
yay juggling.
Hi,
For juggling-records.com i'd like to have it so on each pattern page there is a small note along the lines of AKA: this, this and that. I've put a Google doc together that anyone can edit with alternative names for patterns.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
Patterns AKA
I added a couple of names. I've never heard the term "rocket" before. Does anyone actually use it?
Now this is a brilliant idea for a thread.
I too am very sorry. You know, generally.
Haha. I think what happen was I posted this in reply to one of three duplicated posts I accidentally posted and then the site automatically deleted the duplicate posts (does this happen?) and therefore left my post with a new thread.
